“Homeschooling”: vs. “Home Schooling”

The media is enjoying another round of “Oh, those crazy homeschoolers!”. Should we ignore them? Bury them beneath an avalance of angry letters? Roll our eyes and get back to the Shakespeare?

We do need to keep an eye out, because there can be repercussions from poorly researched news items. Also, some stories presage (instigate?) burdensome legislative proposals that must be confronted.

The best response is a measured, thoughtful response that clearly states facts, refutes misinformation and stereotypes, all without appearing to be “anti-” school, or mainstream culture, or whatever else we might be tempted to take a poke at.

It’s difficult to avoid being sucked into the media maw. Do we really need more homeschoolers appearing on tv shows, only to be misquoted and made to look like anti-social weirdos? Do we really need another homeschool family on Wife Swap?

One thing we could use – is an update to the media’s style guides – those books that dictate which spelling or usage of a term is “correct”. Let’s work on that one, OK?

It’s “homeschooling”, not “home schooling”. Let’s keep reminding them that it’s not “school, but at home.”
